Signing a renovation contract at the customer's home in Belgium
Identify an off-premises renovation contract, deliver the required information and preserve withdrawal evidence before work begins.
The signature location can change the process
A contractor may visit a home to inspect the works and leave with a signed quote. That convenient moment can make the agreement an off-premises consumer contract, with extra information and withdrawal requirements. The signature being electronic does not change the question: where and how was the agreement concluded?
Belgian FPS Economy construction guidance specifically warns renovation firms about contracts concluded away from their business premises. At EU level, the Consumer Rights Directive sets information and withdrawal rules for distance and off-premises contracts.
Specific exceptions can apply. Classify the real transaction with a qualified adviser rather than assuming every home visit has the same result.
Record the route to agreement
Keep the appointment date, place, quote version and acceptance event. Distinguish a site survey from the moment the customer became bound. If the customer later accepted from home through a link, record that remote path too.
Before acceptance, provide the contractor's identity and address, the main characteristics of the work, the total price or calculation method, payment and performance arrangements, complaint handling, and the applicable withdrawal information. Give the customer a durable copy they can retain.
Handle the withdrawal information explicitly
Where a withdrawal right exists, explain the period, how to exercise it, the effects and the standard form. Do not bury the form behind a temporary link. Keep proof of the version supplied and the time it was delivered.
Do not start during the withdrawal period merely because a crew has an opening. If the customer asks for early performance, document the request and the information required for that situation. The treatment of urgent repairs and fully performed services can differ, so avoid a generic checkbox that claims to waive every right.
Keep contract and project start separate
Use separate milestones: information supplied, quote accepted, withdrawal period assessed, deposit received and work authorised. The planner should not mobilise a crew until the contract owner confirms the start gate. A digital signature proves an action, but not necessarily that all prior information was correct.
Preserve the quote, general terms, withdrawal notice, form, acceptance evidence and any early-start request as one immutable contract pack. Later changes belong in a dated variation, not in an overwritten PDF.
Run a short file check before scheduling. A colleague should be able to identify the contract route, the information supplied, the applicable start date and any request for early performance without reconstructing the story from email. If the route is unclear, pause mobilisation and obtain advice. A planning deadline is not a reason to convert uncertainty into an assumed waiver.
